THOUGHTS
THOUGHTS
“Humanity has this undying thirst for limitless elevation to standard of living. Be it material or spiritual, we either blindly, subconsciously or consciously embark on this journey. Being the way we are, we are always trying to find ways to explore, define, and develop our interests and passions for our way of life.
Wines and Spirits are one of those rare passions that encompass almost every discipline in every time period. Such magical elixirs are a make up of nature, soil, time, and people. It finds harmony in history, geography, culture, art, and science. This is what many people generalize as “Terroir”. When many industry professionals are counting just how deep and complex the make up of these delights are, most often miss out on just how approachable they can and should be.
Wines and Spirits are meant to be consumed. If we drink it for the brand then we are forced to highly value only expensive bottles in order to not lose face. If we drink it for the experience, then we can cherish the purest forms of beauty that last a life time. A world’s view in a bottle with just a cork as the barrier. These beverages are thereafter defined by the drinker’s purpose.
To us, wines and spirits are expressions of celebration of life. They pair well with food, occasion, people, nature, and emotion. They become and should be very close to our hearts. So what we can do is to provide you with different keys to help opening your own door to the world of wines and spirits.”

I think there’s an understanding that wine and spirits tasting experiences are very personal. So how can one experience more? How can one objectively share their experiences without losing authenticity and personal touch? How do we develop our own perspectives over outside influences?
I am not offering an answer because I do not know how. I am simply offering my personal perspectives that enhances my own enjoyment of these magical elixirs.
The phrase “Out of Box Thinking” is in itself restrictive because that would mean there is a limit to what one can accomplish. Do you know how big your box is and how big can it be? From another angle, do you know what’s actually inside your box?
People often forget that you do not need to know everything there is to know about wine in order to talk about wine. How can we be better at sharing that experience with others?
With the ever-changing horizon, one thing for certain is that I know just how much I do not know and what an exciting thing that is!
However, I do know one thing.
I do know that whether someone truly respects the world of wines and spirits or if they are driven by something else.
When it comes to nature vs nurture debate, nothing in life is certain, what we are exposed to throughout our journey from inception helps shaping who we are and what we have affinity to.
Let’s talk about exposure. The reality in wine and spirit appreciation is the monetary aspect which forms a barrier for many to grasp just how vast and complex the world is. Hypothetically, what happens if the barrier to exposure is removed, what would your approach be then? Let me share two very recent observations from my personal encounters.
Now I look at visiting a liquor store sort of like a treasure hunt of sorts. Finding interesting brands, styles, regions, grape varieties, or the combination of the above can give me more pleasure than be. As it is an endless journey, I still have much to learn and enjoy!
Many first encounters, including my own, with uninitiated palates, were most likely unimpressed.
Why do I say that?
When reminiscing the journey thus far, I came across this article I wrote again, my views are still very much the same. Only now I know truly just how vast and deep it can be to paint this grand vision and possibility for greater sensibility, imagination, and respect when it comes to wines and spirits appreciation.
Real connosseurship will only come after having deep understanding and appreciation for the classics as well as endless and passionate pursuits for the exciting and new - with some harmless snobbery for entertainment.
I did not know what to expect - and I certainly did not expect such intense complexity delivered in such a free spirited elegance. I became a fan that day.
What Checkmate also has going for them is the human element that is actually rarely seen by other wineries we have visited thus far in the Okanagan Valley.
Somehow the character of Captain America comes to mind. Strong, Just, Charismatic, Disciplined, and Courageous.
This regional expression actually includes fruits taken from Oakville and Stag’s Leap including from To Kalon and Wappo Hill!
Ornellaia 2013 is one of those pleasures that you initially make excuses for but immediately found salvation from guilt.
On the palate it is quite creamy with more of the exciting sweetness like sparkling fresh fruit crystals if that makes any sense.
With its amazing staying power, I only hope I can be patient enough to let it mature for decades before opening again.
I feel there is still more of this wine yet to be discovered. This evolution through time was observed in this one pour which was quite fun actually.
In the spirit of trying something new, we started lining up at the very posh looking Jinya Ramen Bar on Robson St.
