Yellow Chartreuse has this unusual balance of herbal sweetness, gentle bitterness, and warming spice. Behind the honeyed herbs, I also find a faintly wild, musky edge that feels almost foxy.
It is produced from a closely guarded formula involving 130 plants, flowers, bark, roots, and spices. The botanicals are prepared by the Carthusian monks, then developed through distillation, different forms of maceration, and long ageing in oak vats.
Even saffron remains part of the mystery. It is not publicly confirmed in the official recipe, yet I smelled something distinctly saffron-like in the glass: dry, floral, gently bitter, and quietly golden. Perhaps saffron is truly there; perhaps the other botanicals simply created its impression. Either way, I perceived it—so within the world of this song, I chose to let it be there.
That ambiguity became part of 129 & Saffron. Saffron is both a possible botanical and the elusive golden thread running through the glass.
To me, Yellow Chartreuse carries the feeling of sunshine and rain existing at the same time: bright and comforting, but quietly bittersweet underneath. Sweetness arrives first, bitterness follows, and a gentle fire remains after everything else begins to fade.
I expressed that feeling through a fusion of Japanese and French slow jazz, shaped by rain-lit city streets, Alpine botanicals, saffron, and the old image of a sunshower as the fox’s wedding.
There is also a small easter egg connecting this story back to an earlier song, 無恙 — Unscathed.
