A VinoZen SenArch Interpretation of Bodega Garzón Balasto 2020
Some wines give flavours.
Some wines give structure.
Every so often, a wine gives an image.
When I first opened Bodega Garzón Balasto 2020, the response was almost immediate. Before I could fully organize tasting notes or descriptors, an image formed in my mind.
A vast pale granite presence on a windswept Atlantic coastline.
Cold. Mineral. Massive.
Not a creature exactly, but something ancient. Something that felt as though it had existed long before people arrived to name it.
As the wine opened, however, the image began to change.
The hard edges softened. Warmth emerged. Flowers appeared through cracks in stone. What initially felt like an immovable granite guardian gradually took on a deeper sense of age and life. The image became almost mammoth-like—not literally, but emotionally. Ancient, enduring, weathered by time.
That progression became the foundation for BALASTO and it is an expression of VinoZen SenArch.

This project was not planned.
In fact, I had no intention of creating a dedicated SenArch piece for this wine.
Yet the sensory response was strong enough that it continued to occupy my thoughts long after the glass was empty.
The visual world came first.
Then the music followed.
The resulting composition explores the tension I experienced in the wine itself:
Monumental yet refined
Mineral yet alive
Powerful yet restrained
Ancient yet evolving
The low-frequency foundation behaves almost like tectonic pressure beneath the earth. Above it, piano, atmosphere, and movement emerge gradually, much like vegetation reclaiming weathered stone.
Rather than illustrating tasting notes directly, the music attempts to translate the experience of inhabiting the wine.
What is SenArch?
SenArch, short for Sensory Architecture, is an ongoing VinoZen exploration into cross-modal sensory perception.
Wine is rarely experienced through flavour alone.
Texture influences emotion.
Sound influences attention.
Visual atmosphere influences expectation.
Memory shapes perception.
SenArch explores what happens when these sensory pathways are intentionally translated between one another.
Instead of asking:
“What flavours are in the glass?”
SenArch also asks:
“What world does the glass create?”
BALASTO is one such answer.
The Experience
For the fullest experience:
Pour a glass of Bodega Garzón Balasto 2020.
Allow the wine time to breathe.
Put on headphones.
Turn up the bass.
Enter the soundscape.
What you experience may be entirely different from what I experienced.
That is part of the point.
This is not an attempt to tell you what to perceive.
It is an invitation to explore what the wine reveals to you.
