It stemmed from my VinoZen Society Selection 2025: Canadian Whisky where my exploration became inspiration.
What is 909? To a musician, it’s the beat that changed everything. To a distiller, it’s the rule that set us free.
VinoZen presents a genre-bending Canadian-Country EDM anthem featuring our very own Kaia, Noor, and The Maestro. This track celebrates the freedom found in the duality of "909"—bridging the gap between the legendary Roland TR-909 drum machine and the innovative 9.09% rule in Canadian Whisky.
🎹 The Machine (1983) The Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer was a hybrid pioneer. It was the first Roland drum machine to mix analog synthesis with digital samples, and the first to speak the language of MIDI. It didn’t just keep time; it revolutionized the texture of sound.
🥃 The Spirit (The "Lost" Era) While the 909 was redefining rhythm in the 80s, Canadian Whisky was fighting for survival. Facing a market shift toward vodka, distillers transitioned to lighter, "bland" profiles, cementing a reputation as a mere cocktail mixer.
🇨🇦 The Redemption But hidden in the regulations was the 9.09% Rule. Originating in the 1950s to suit American palates, this rule allows distillers to blend 1/11th of other aged spirits or wines into their whisky. Today, we reclaim this rule. It is no longer a loophole—it is the Spirit of Freedom, allowing us to craft the most innovative and diverse whiskies in the world. Listen to the rhythm.
