Inspiration: The Martini Variation
“Vodka Martini, shaken, not stirred.” We’ve all heard this famous line from a certain British secret agent. Some say he likes it more diluted so he can still keep a clear head (sure). Maybe there’s more to it? Perhaps it says something about his personality or a hidden secret?
Also, while many purists would say only Gin makes a true martini, this guy famously takes it with Vodka—as if he just wanted chilled ethanol water. Like he needed the buzz, but without the botanical distraction.
Now, what’s more interesting is when he invented the drink “Vesper”—3 parts Gin, 1 part Vodka, a splash of Kina Lillet, and a lemon twist. Is that a metaphor for the colourful rollercoaster the drink’s namesake gave our 00 agent? Moreover, what’s the purpose of the vodka being there? Is he still holding onto something?
To each their own, for sure. Even with the true martini—that’s right, not the colourful stuff—there are so many ways to make one:
Gin or Vodka
Shaken or Stirred
Dry or Wet
Dirty or Clean
Olive or Twist
Bitters or None
The Martini Variation is sung by Kaia (Mix Me Up). As a mixologist and bartender, she’s seen it all. It makes you wonder: does the way people like their martini say something about their personality? And maybe... reveal some hidden secrets?
LYRICS
Gin or vodka, what's the play
Seen 'em ordered every way
Bone dry, with just a whisper passing through
A lemon twist, for something new
An olive brine, a silver skin
Just let the evening show begin
Now some wear the name, but they're not quite the same
A sweet-tasting chapter in a different game
With coffee or passion fruit, a colourful show
But it's each to their own, the way the vibes flow
But then you watch, and you can tell
It's more than just a cocktail
A bone-dry wit for a bone-dry glass
Hoping the moment's gonna last
A dirty pour for a dirty little secret
You tell the glass, hoping it'll keep it
Oh oh, stirred or shaken, it's never the same
In the chill of the glass, you whisper your name
It's the one little truth you don't try to hide
A quiet confession you're keeping inside
It's more than a drink, it's the role that you claim
Yeah, stirred or shaken, your glass holds your name
And in the quiet of this smoky dive
Where all the hidden parts of us survive
Are you rattled? Need to cool the burn
Or smooth and steady? Waiting your turn
You don't say a word… you just make the call
And that one choice, it says it all
Oh, stirred or shaken, it's never the same
In the chill of the glass, you whisper your name
It's the one little truth you don't try to hide
A quiet confession you're keeping inside
It's more than a drink, it's the role that you claim
Yeah, stirred or shaken, your glass holds your name
Gin or vodka, what's the play
The smallest choices give the truth away
The music's soft, the lights are low
It's in the quiet things you let show
