A silky jazz-blues confession steeped in Pinot Noir, whispered memory, and longing.

“Domaine” was written between places I’ve stood… and one I still dream of.

It’s a quiet tribute to the Pinot lands that shaped me.

See if you can pick them out—I never name them outright.

But they’re in the scene, the mood—woven into every transition and emotion.

This song isn’t just about wine.

Not just about the “Heartbreak Grape” — Pinot Noir.

It’s about the experience of every single drop.

And I’d go back again.

Inspiration: Domaine

The word “Domaine” evokes Burgundy—sacred ground for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. At its pinnacle: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. A name that embodies rarity, reverence, and unreachable beauty. I’ve never tasted DRC myself. A few of my clients, students, and DipWSET classmates have—but most couldn’t quite articulate the experience, for reasons I won’t get into. One described it as an endless field of fresh strawberries, a dream of roses. I believe there’s far more to it than that, based on what I’ve come to know. Will I ever confirm it for myself? Never say never.

Pinot Noir is known as “The Heartbreak Grape.” Easy to grow, nearly impossible to perfect. It’s sensitive—to land, to weather, to touch. Terroir is often defined by soil and climate, but I believe people are part of that terroir too. The care, the intention—it all leaves a trace in the wine.

There are stunning expressions of Pinot Noir across the world. In 2024, I tasted 35 from the Okanagan Valley for the VinoZen Society Selection 2024. Even within that one region, Pinot tells dozens of stories. Hints of some of the wineries I alluded to in the song can be found in the selection.

Back to the Song.

“Domaine” is mine. My experience to Pinot Noir, with Pinot Noir.

This song isn’t just about wine. It’s about memory, longing, and the places that shaped me. Some I’ve walked. Some I still dream of. You might recognize them in the lyrics. You might feel them in the pauses between notes.

Let it take you there.

Lyrics

Met her on a golden hill

Where silence bloomed and time stood still

Her eyes like dusk her breath like rain

Soft as silk and twice the stain

We stood where the mountain held the sky

She pressed like truth I couldn't deny

I touched the hem that brushed my chest—

Like two lovers passing half undressed

She's built to stay and I still obey

Domaine… she don't say my name

But she pulls me close just the same

A cross in the vines where I once knelt down

Her skirt afloat like a whispered crown

Domaine… I call I crave

She don't reply but I still obey

And every night… I go back again

Yes every night… I go back again

She once told me of a boy named Mart

Opened her hand then moved apart

That cross still leans where the roots run deep

Where I bowed to her body and dared not speak

The vines held breath the air held flame—

And all of it answered to her name

Domaine… she don't say my name

But she pours herself just the same

A cross in the vines where I once knelt down

Her skirt afloat like a whispered crown

Domaine… I burn I stay

She don't forgive but she lets me pay

And every night… I go back again

Guess I have completely fallen

The land remembers

So does she

And I… go back again
